    As a couple or with friends, whether you’re staying for a weekend or longer, tackle Lisbon’s seven hills and explore this labyrinthine city, with its neighbourhoods so distinct they are like villages. Each one has a very clear identity: popular, vibrant, luxurious, trendy or arty. To experience the rich soul of Lisbon, visit:

    • Alfama, a very old district and one of the rare surviving parts of Lisbon’s past, from before the 1755 earthquake that took just a few hours to devastate the city.
    • Príncipe Real, the domain of designers and hipsters, who flock to its charming little squares, unusual shops and elegant cafés.
    • Baixa-Chiado, the heart of the city, offering a rich history and fine living, with its beautiful monuments, it shopping streets and its countless restaurants.
    • Bairro Alto, the neighbourhood for night owls, with the customers of its countless bars spilling out into the street;
    • Bélem, the city’s memory, with its eponymous tower, the Hieronymites Monastery and its many museums.

    • Take tram n°28: this faithful old tram with retro appeal winds through the city’s narrowest and steepest streets. A great way to discover Lisbon!
    • Visit the magnificent Hieronymites Monastery and the neighbouring Belém Tower. This guardian of the Port of Lisbon has seen the caravels of Magellan and Vasco de Gama sail by.
    • Enjoy a panorama of the city from one of the many viewpoints, such as the Garden of São Pedro de Alcântara, high above Bairro Alto, and the Miradouro de Santa Luzia overlooking Alfama.
    • Sample a glass of Douro wine, one of the finest in the world, while listening to fado at the Clube de Fado: a temple of this typical local music.
    • Do some shopping at Embaxaida, a shopping mall in a superb 19th-century neo-Moorish palace.
    • Rent bikes and pedal along the banks of the Tagus.
    • Melt with pleasure over the pastries from Pästeis de Belem, which since 1837 has been making the city’s best pastel de nata (an egg custard tart flavoured with cinnamon).
    • Drink a little glass of Ginja, a delicious cherry liqueur. Sample the best by going to a specialist such as A Ginjinha, a little bar in Baixa.
    • Try some fine food in the Mercado da Ribeira, a modern, 10,000 square metre steel and glass hall, where over 30 renowned chefs cater for foodies.
    • Light a candle at Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa), the oldest church in the city, and pray to Saint Anthony of Padua, who was born in Lisbon. He is the patron saint of mariners, the oppressed, animals, pregnant women, the starving and seekers of lost things!
