Fully renovated terminals at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport by 2017

Published on 04-06-18

As part of TAXFREE 2014, the annual international event for the duty-free industry now celebrating its 30th anniversary, of which Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur is the main partner, Nice Côte d’Azur Airport today unveiled its new plans to give the Group an entirely European heartbeat. Primarily aimed at significantly improving the passenger path, the project makes the client the Group's main focus and driving dynamic to give him the most unforgettable retail experience of any European airport - with that added French Riviera touch.

'This huge project, which involves a total rethink of the existing airport buildings, redesigns Terminals 1 & 2 and builds a new extension to create a seamless passenger path, bigger operating areas, greater traffic capacity and a more dynamic retail area. It's an ambitious plan that offers the Group, its clients and partners exciting prospects' comments Dominique Thillaud, President of the Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur Management Board.

In January 2015 Nice Côte d’Azur Airport will begin work on Terminal 1 and will start preparing for work on Terminal 2. This is a two-phase project that will begin with the ambitious redesign of the existing terminals, followed by an extension for Terminal 2 - a new module that will be a continuation of the Cone and is scheduled for completion at the start of the next decade. The terminals will remain open during the work.

The improved passenger path will also make for smoother security controls by creating a single big security area that is better able to deal with peak passenger volumes.
At the core of the project lies a bigger and higher quality retail area and passenger movement and comfort, all managed by the Commercial Business Unit.

'By 2017, both terminals will have been entirely renovated (May 2016 - T1 and May 2017 - T2) to provide double the retail area and double the waiting areas (+1200 m2 - T1 ; + 4000 m2 - T2).
Terminal 2 will have two extensions that together will add 4300 m2 to the eastern side of Terminal 2-2' explains Filip Soete, the head of the Commercial Business Unit. 'Part will be given over to passenger movement and comfort with double the waiting areas and lounges airside. At over 3300 m2 when the work is completed, the retail area will be twice its current size and will be designed to attract the maximum number of customers. Passengers in the new Terminal 1 will come out of security screening into a large store selling alcohol, tobacco and fragrances before they reach the departures lounge. This will be a vast waiting area surrounded by shops. Passengers will be sitting just a few feet away from some of the best names in the luxury and fashion industries. Côte d‘Azur essentials, French essentials, trend setters, airport essentials - passengers will be able to let themselves go among a profusion of brands. Catering will also be repositioned to deliver a genuine experience through original and entertaining concepts and gourmet eateries that uphold the values of Mediterranean cuisine. Invitations to tender either have already been launched or are about to be launched and we will be announcing names in 2015».

This is a high-end approach to fit the profile of the passengers of Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur, the second airport in France and the door into the mythical Côte d’Azur. With 3 airports at Nice, Cannes and Saint-Tropez, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur attracts over 11.6 million passengers a year, 53% of whom are international passengers and 50% are CSP+ [socio-professional class +], offering them flights to more than 105 direct destinations such as New York, Dubai and Moscow.

The next big event is the final of the 2014 Frontier Awards - the airport Oscars - where the internationally recognised dynamism of Nice Côte d’Azur Airport means it is competing against Dubai, Delhi and Incheon for the title of best airport operator!
